Why Would I Need A New Shell?

Your ear is one of the few parts of your body that continues to grow, and not only that, but a change in your body weight can also changes the size of your ear canal. This can cause your hearing aid to fit too tight, too loose, or to feedback while in your ear.

Also, your aid may have fit poorly from the beginning due to a poor impression, or poor craftsmanship during the process of cutting, grinding, and detailing the impression.

Often, putting a new shell (the custom piece that is made to fit your ear) on your hearing aid can make a dramatic improvement in hearing. We offer this service at Hearing Haven for $275. This includes a 12 month warranty on the electronics, and any repairs that may be necessary when we put the new shell on your aid.

Getting an impression of your ear made

The biggest limitation of getting a hearing aid upgraded via the Internet is if you need a new shell; this requires an impression of your ear, but there are a few possibilities to solve that problem:

1. Do a Google.com search for ear impression kit to find a company that offers impressions kits.

DISCLAIMER: We do not endorse any company(s) you may find through the above mentioned search; please use your own discretion. The best choice is usually to have a local professional take the impression, as we can only make a new shell as good as the impression we receive.

2. You can find a hearing aid dispenser or audiologist to take impressions of your ears for a fee.

3. Another possibility is to go to a gun show or similar event that makes custom noise plugs, ask them to make an impression for you,  and send those along with your hearing aids. Make sure to ask for impressions with a long canal.
